Time for the Apron

The Apron Design Market is located along the rivers edge at Seaport, Launceston's restaurant precinct. The quarterly market attracts local designers/producers displaying their work including, accessories, homewares, jewellery, lighting, food, fashion, furniture, flowers and lots more.

The WINTER market will be held on Friday, 1st JULY, 4 - 9pm and Saturday, 2nd JULY, 9 - 4pm.

Our friend Jonathan Wherrett is selling some of his personal images of life in Japan to raise funds for the Australian Red Cross Japan Disaster Appeal. Having long admired this piece, we are thrilled that its one of the 18 he is offering, and that we can contribute in some small way to the enormous job of rebuilding after the recent devestation. Jonathan will donate 100% of the money he raises from selling his images.

Sandy Duncanson Social Justice Lecture

On 2nd May 2011, the Hon. Michael Kirby AC CMG will deliver the inagural Sandy Duncanson Social Justice Lecture, entitled "My Journey with Social Justice".

In June 2010, our friend Sandy died at the age of 37, after surviving cancer for 16 years. The lecture will officially launch the Sandy Duncanson Social Justice Bursary to continue Sandy's passion for social justice.

Lego pretty much rules at D & D HQ (apart from Playmobil which is a firm family favourite). So Santa thought he was on a winner with this little beauty, sourced after much searching from the good old U S of A (there were none left in his workshop, or something ...). Unfortunately the 4 year old likes to take only distorted close ups of things, so its not been as popular as anticipated. It looks GREAT on the bookshelf though, next to the computer, where the adults of the house can admire it. Oh well, good try.

Strange Fruit

As part of 10 Days on the Island, Tasmania's biannual arts festival, Strange Fruit performed Ringing the Changes at the historic penal settlement at Port Arthur. It was awe inspiring watching the performers swing on poles as they made music with bells, gongs and drums. A must see if you ever get the chance.

The Finders Keepers

Dick & Dora's next outing is to the Autumn/Winter 2011 Finders Keepers Melbourne market, to be held on the 26th and 27th March 2011.

The market, at Shed4 at the Docklands, brings together new emerging and contemporary independent artists and designers of original and high creative standards from both Melbourne and all around Australia.

This market will have an array of new designers and artists stalls as well as a fresh music line up and heaps more features to be announced!

The markets are FREE entry for all and feature live music, with a cafe and bar open all day.

Dora Loves LEON

LEON is a London based fast food joint with a difference. When it was started in 2004, the brains behind it "tried to imagine what a high-street fast food joint might be like in heaven: a place where fresh, unprocessed, satisfying meals are served with pride". Luckily for us on the other side of the globe, there are 2 cookbooks available, and we highly recommend them. Apart from containing fabulous recipes, the books are also an amusing read.

One half of Dick & Dora is a dab hand at school lunches, but for the other, they are a new experience. This morning we've knocked out some of "Sally Dolton's Musesli Bars" from LEON "Naturally Fast Food", Book 2 (page 182) and they are SO good, we're going to share them (well, the recipe anyway, we'll be lucky if there are any left for school lunch tomorrow).

SALLY DOLTON'S MUESLI BARS

270g dried fruit (e.g. apricots, figs, dates, pears etc - a mixture of just choose one)

40 g nuts (we left these out because of nut free school policy and just topped up on seeds)

80g seeds (e.g. pumpkin, sunflower)

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

80 ml fruit juice (apple or grape)

2 level tablespoons honey

60g wholemeal flour

120 g rolled oats

1. Preheat oven to 190 C/ 375 F

2. Put dried fruit into food processor and blitz until well chopped. Do the same with the nuts. Put the fruit, nuts, seeds and cinnamon into bowl.

3. Warm the fruit juice and honey together in a pan large enough to eventually hold all the ingredients, until the honey is dissolved. Add the flour and oats, and stir in the fruit and nuts.

4. Smooth the mixture into a 25 x 30 cm baking tray about 2.5 deep. Line with baking paper if tray is non-stick.

5. Bake in the oven for 20 mins - longer if you would like your bars more crunchy.

6. Allow to cool, then cut into rectangular bars. They will keep for 2 weeks in an airtight container (we challenge you!!).

Our "Daisy Chain" neckpieces were actually released before Christmas and sold super well, but we're only just getting to popping them on the blog now. They can be worn long, or doubled around twice and worn short, which looks looks like a bunch of petals around your neck. Very cute (even if we do say so ourselves).

We have quite a few products about to be released, however, we have taken some time out to visit MONA, David Walsh's fantastic private Museum of Old and New Art which recently opened in Hobart. It is fantastically overwhelming to have something like this right on our doorstep and we're itching to get back! We caught the boat which just added to the excitement.

Expertly project managed by the 4 year old and despite many last minute alterations, this is the finished version. There are a number of workplace hazards associated with Market season. The biggest for Dick & Dora is putting on weight! The fabulous Bree from Mondo Mama's Kitchen has kindly sent us through a sneak peak of the food that she is lovingly preparing for the Mother's Market.

As well as a range of delicious treats to eat there, Mondo Mama's Kitchen will also be selling mince pies, Christmas cakes and pan forte to take home.

Thank you to everyone who contributed to the success of the recent Pink Ribbon Day Breakfast (see earlier post), it was quite spectacular and we raised a very tidy sum which goes towards further research into breast cancer. This is the organising committee, each wearing a hat chosen from Dora's Nana's hatbox. Why? Long story, BUT, we love the photo, taken by the very talented Jonathan Wherrett as part of his Photobooth concept. Thanks Jonathan!

Jonathan is also the creative talent behind The Essential Portrait, which is a fantastic way to make sure you have at least one decent set of family photos. We're not your typical family photo types, so Jonathan's approach suited us perfectly. Have a look around his website and you'll see what we mean. Oh, and he has a November special.

Pink Ribbon Day Breakfast

October 25 is Pink Ribbon Day and Dick & Dora have been busy helping to organise a big breakfast at Moorilla Estate Vineyard to raise funds for breast cancer research. It's a sell out event again this year, with 270 tickets sold and a fantastic range of prizes and auction items. Put it in your diary for next year! This weekend we'll be making masses of pink tissue paper pom poms to decorate the venue, and we're looking forward to getting up at 4.30 am Monday morning to do the finishing touches, REALLY, we are.

Debrett's Guide to Eating a Banana

Some years ago when D & D lived in London, they were invited to a couple of posh wedding's which necessitated their purchase of Debrett's Guide to Etiquette and Modern Manners, so they could be sure they weren't the Aussies disgracing themselves (that said, Dick did get a bit sick of being on his best behaviour at one do and deliberately wore his jacket inside out much to the tut tutting of other guests at the table. I KNOW, it IS shocking!!). Anyway, during the recent wedding plans, Dora once again reached for Debrett's, and did a bit of general reading as well. Did you know there is a polite way to eat a banana, and we quote -

"Another tricky one, bananas must never be eaten monkey-style at the table. Firstly, peel with a knife, pulling off the skin in vertical strips. Cut off around one third of an inch at each end, and then cut small disks of fruit and eat either with the fingers or with a fork if provided".

What? No monkey-style? What are we going to tell the 3 year old?

A Happy End to the Party Season

Dick and Dora have their birthdays within four days of each other and with them comes an end to what is fondly known at Dick & Dora HQ as the "party season". Dora was particularly impressed with this little birthday surprise, whipped up by Dick and the bambino. The very easy and incredibly delicious recipe was from Hand-made Foods, a business run by Dick's cousin in the UK.

Now its back to business. HQ is buzzing with new ideas, so stay tuned.

We wish!! One of the things keeping us busy lately has been making stock to fill an order for Peter Alexander, Australia's very own PJ's king, who is introducing new lines into his 30+ stores. Despite our absence from blogland, we have been beavering away in the background, working on new designs, including this "Hello Petal" neckpiece, which as you can see, makes quite a statement. Speedy Gonzales

Did we mention we're going to be at Magnolia Square? It feels like everything at D & D HQ is being carried out at high speed, with the speedy gonzales theme music playing in the background. It's a fairly major undertaking organising stock, stall set-up, children ... you know how it goes. Good fun though and there will be some celebrating to do if we manage to pull it all together. Is it wrong to think of champagne at 8.04 in the morning?
